SMILE (simply known as SMILE) stands for Small Incision Lenticule Extraction. It is a less invasive method that allows correction of even higher myopic prescriptions than previously treatable by standard Blade Lasik or Femto Lasik Laser Eye Surgery.

Smile Procedure: How it works

SMILE® is a minimally invasive Laser Vision Correction procedure for myopia and astigmatism correction. During SMILE eye surgery, the ZeissVisuMax femtosecond laser creates a lenticule inside the cornea. The surgeon extracts this lenticule through a small incision of 2mm created by laser, thereby achieving the desired vision correction.

Eye anaesthetic drops are used to completely numb the eye during the procedure. The state-of-the-art Carl Zeiss VisuMax laser places a series of precise pulses in the centre of the cornea with extraordinary 3D placement accuracy. These pulses form bubbles that are less than 1/100th the width of a human hair. These bubbles outline the tissue that the surgeon needs to remove to effectively change the shape of the cornea. The laser then creates a tiny connecting tunnel through which the surgeon draws out this tissue.

In SMILE, as no flap is created so the healing time is faster than conventional Lasik. The procedure takes a matter of minutes, and the vision is 80% better instantly and reaches 100% within a few hours. No other laser platform in the world has been able to match the accuracy of the Carl Zeiss VisuMax in performing this keyhole Laser Eye Treatment.

Suitable Candidates

SMILE is most suitable for myopic patients. It is even suitable for those who may have been told that they are not suitable candidates for laser eye treatment because of thin corneas, dry eyes, or contact lens intolerance.
